Water-resource-rich Sichuan has been a major target of the latest round of the anti-corruption crackdown, with a number of officials probed, including former vice-governor Guo Yongxiang, who was in charge of the province's water resources development, such as hydropower construction, from 2006-08.

Chinese authorities have sacked another associate of Zhou Yongkang, in the latest apparent move targeting the powerful former security chief.

The Communist Party's anti-corruption watchdog said that Guo Yongxiang, a former vice-governor of Sichuan province, had been expelled from the party and removed from office.

Li Chuncheng, Sichuan's former deputy party chief and an ally of retired security boss Zhou Yongkang, has been stripped of his titles for violating party discipline.

Li was also expelled from the Communist Party, its disciplinary watchdog said yesterday.

The announcement brings the party one step closer to deciding the fate of Zhou, who is believed to have been placed under detention in December amid a wide-ranging graft investigation.
