The Value of Gold

This Is What $800 Million In Ten Pieces Of Art Looks Like. Here is what $81.9 million of it looks like.

Why do you think someone paid $81.9 million for this? This is the Pets.com of the art world. It would be trivial to have this knocked off by a Chinese artist. For a few hundred or a few thousand dollars, you could hang "great masterpieces" in your home and claim to be an anonymous art buyer to your friends. Plus, the price is inflated by the amount of wealth concentrated at the top of the economic pyramid at the peak of a cycle. Aside from the Monets and Picassos, a lot of this is glorified fiat currency.

  1. I wouldn't exclude Picasso from the fiat comment - he produced enormous amounts of stuff, the majority of which is pure garbage and he enjoyed laughing at the fools who bought his things. Even his best works are bad - but maybe I'm just not hip enough to understand modern art.

I've seen three Rothkos in person and each was pure idiocy. Thankfully there was an old master exhibit near by that I could retreat to in order to regain my sanity and appreciation for truly exquisite art.
