AFP: Why has a Chinese city's lockdown sent aluminium prices surging?
Located near the border with Vietnam, Baise is nicknamed the "aluminium capital of southern China".China is no longer a reliable trade partner, along with many other nations that have paranoid reactions to seasonal respitory illnesses. Countries will have to find sources for everything outside of China, as does China have to source everything it finds other nations stop exporting.Home to around 3.5 million people, Baise is a hub for aluminium mining and production.
It produces about 2.2 million tonnes of the commodity per year -- more than 80 percent of the output in the resource-rich Guangxi region.
Guangxi is China's main alumina-exporting region, shipping out around 500,000 tonnes of the aluminium component per month.
Money Control: Aluminium stocks surge as metal's price climbs to 13-year high
Shares of aluminium producers in India—Hindalco Industries and National Aluminium Company—gained on February 9 as the price of the metal hit a 13-year high to cross $3,200 a tonne.China locks down cities. Europe has retarded energy policies and electricity is the largest input cost for aluminum. The price of aluminium has risen more than 14 percent in the international market this year on concerns that the supply-demand gap could lead to a tight market for the commodity for the rest of 2022.
Plant closure and capacity cuts in several European and Chinese smelters recently have added to concerns that supply will not be able to keep up with the rising demand, bolstered by the reopening of the economy as the COVID-19 pandemic shows signs of ebbing.
